WHAT IS SOSNA?

SOSNA, the South of South Neighborhood Association, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation which serves as the NAC, or Neighborhood Advisory Committee for Census Tracts 13, 14 and 19 in the 30th Ward. The purpose of a NAC is to facilitate citizen input into community development process.The SOSNA NAC is funded by OHCD, the City's Office of Housing & Community Development.

WHEN DOES SOSNA MEET?

SOSNA General Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of every month, September through June.

WHO RUNS SOSNA?

SOSNA is governed by an elected 15 person Board of Directors, all of whom are residents of the community. No Board Member receives a salary. They are all volunteers.

CAN I VOTE FOR BOARD MEMBERS OR RUN FOR THE BOARD?

In order to vote, you must be 18 years of age, attend 4 SOSNA General Meetings per year, and register as a member of the SOSNA team. If you have an interest in the area, you can become a member. Nominations for Board seats are generally held in September, with elections held in October. OHCD monitors the elections, and funds the NAC.

WHAT ELSE DOES SOSNA DO?

SOSNA has a Housing Counseling Program funded by OHCD. Program staff can help you purchase a house, help you if you are delinquent in rent or mortgage payments, and help you to clear up credit issues.

CURRENT AND PAST ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • SOSNA subsidized an affordable day camp for area youngsters, Camp Fantastic, for 2 summers in a row.
  • SOSNA managed a successful program that employed area residents to clean Graduate Hospital properties.
  • SOSNA has worked on the Royal Theater Redevelopment Program, and nominated Universal Community Homes to redevelop the Royal.
  • SOSNA has fenced area lots, and can help you with gardening projects and tree planting.
  • SOSNA advocates for PHA residents and has helped secure repairs in their homes.
  • SOSNA has marketed Homestart properties to area residents for 5 years in a row.
  • SOSNA is the affordable housing leader in our neighborhood, bringing more than 125 units of affordable housing to date, with another 27 to be developed in partnership with Universal Companies [details]
  • SOSNA is working with the new South Street West Business Association, and has secured funding for a new streetscape and new pedestrian-friendly lights.
  • SOSNA has intervened on behalf of residents needing Basic Systems Repair, if the work has not been up to standards.
  • SOSNA provides an annual award in memory of Michelle Cutner for children at the Arthur School.
  • SOSNA has provided funds for needy neighborhood residents suffering catastrophes.
  • SOSNA has sponsored the Farmer's Market, 17th and South, every Weds. from June-Sept from 3 PM to 7 PM.
  • SOSNA can help with your block party.
  • SOSNA operated a children's photography program at Artists' Village, and a children's art program at the Marian Anderson Center in partnership with the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts
  • SOSNA operated a computer training program at Artists' Village with Drexel University and The Regis Group.
